The 5 types of digital marketing and how they work

types of digital marketing

Are you new to digital marketing? Here’s our lowdown on the 5 main types of digital marketing and how you can make them work for you.

  1. Search engine optimisation (SEO)

Search engine optimisation is all about making sure your website performs well in organic search results. Organic search results are the search results you don’t pay for, and to rank highly in them you need to make sure your website pleases Googlebot, which crawls the internet in order to index websites for the Google search engine. Google is forever making changes to how it ranks websites, but current elements include loading speed, links to and from other sites, correctly labelled images and authoritative content that contains relevant keywords without being overly stuffed with them. 2. Pay Per Click

Pay per click advertising refers to a range of different types of online ads, the common thread being that you pay each time someone clicks on the ad. They can include the ads that show up at the top or of Google search results, ads that appear on web pages that you visit, ads that appear in YouTube videos and ads in mobile apps. You can tailor who these ads are shown to in order to increase your chances of success, and there are options to suit every budget.

3. Social media marketing

Social media marketing is the deliberate use of social media to promote your business by building a community of followers, interacting with them and encouraging them to identify with your brand. In other words, it’s far more than posting the odd post or totally automating your social media efforts. You need to identify the platforms your potential customers use and build your presence there through regular, well-thought-out posts. A constant steam of posts that essentially say “buy my product” will not work; these days it’s all about posting with personality, sharing interesting things that people will respond to and reacting to their responses. Social media marketing also includes paying for social media adverts and to boost posts.

4. Content marketing

Content marketing refers to content you create in order to bring people to your site, engage them and hopefully convert them into customers. It can include videos, blog posts, eBooks, podcasts, white papers and more. Having great content on your website can also help to boost its performance in organic search results, and gives you something to share via your social media platforms.

5. Email marketing

Arguably the oldest form of digital marketing, email marketing involves sending out mailshots to people who have signed up to receive communications from you. It’s still one of the most powerful forms of digital marketing, and its effectiveness depends on the quality of the mailing list you have built up. Read this article to discover some of the techniques you can use to encourage people to join your mailing list. Effective email marketing is often tailored towards specific recipients, so remember to personalise it as much as you can. Create compelling offers and generate a sense of urgency to get them to click through to your site.
